How to Set a Program Objective
An objective is the North Star of your program. Everything you design and build should help your users accomplish the objective you’re about to define. One way to think about an objective is by asking this question:
“What should users be able to do once they’ve completed my program?”
Program objectives should be clear, specific, measurable, and achievable. Here are a few great examples of program objectives for SMS-based experiences:
- By the end of this program, participants will be able to utilize comedic techniques in written communication and meetings.
- By the end of this program, participants will be able to cook 12 unique plant-based dishes in order to reduce their consumption of animal products.
- By the end of this program, participants will be able to create their own SMS-based course.
In this tutorial, we discuss how to get started with defining your program's objective.
Questions to Ask Yourself When Developing Your Program Objective:
- Identify Your Ideal Participant.
- What are the goals and motivations of your ideal participants in taking your program?
- What pain points or challenges do your ideal participants have that your program can address?
- What feedback have your received from your audience, and how can this inform the content you create for your program?
- Define Your Program's Objective.
- What do I want my participants to talk away from this experience knowing or being able to do?
- What knowledge or skills do I want them to gain?
